Female designers: Diane Von Furstenberg, Stella McCartney and Coco Chanel: still the exception to the rule!Today is International Women's Day and a great opportunity to celebrate the success of women everywhere. Vogue is an area where women through the ages have held a certain sway, even before the rise of the feminist movement, with icons like Coco Chanel taking centre stage. But they have always been the exception to the rule and even today the vast majority of successful designers are men. This is why we think it's important to support female talent, even in an industry that looks on the surface to be female-dominated. Women designers are generally more attuned to clothes and accessories that flatter the female form and fit more comfortably into our lives, and after all, women are by far the biggest vogue consumers; powering a recession-defying industry that's worth billions worldwide. Surely it's time we got more of a say in what we don? Red Magazine has been doing its bit to promote female talent recently, with a feature on rising stars of the future in the younger age brackets. In their '20 Under 30' hot list, several of the influential women selected work in fashion, and they include 'accessories queen' Lucy Hutchings, 29. Hutchings has won praise for her 'unique, exotic, glamorous, edgy, earthy, wild and fantasy-tastic' jewellery, which we certainly rate here at The Bag Lady. Hutchings' chunky pieces made from semi-precious stones are just the sort of versatile items we want in these hard economic times: investment pieces that work just as well at the office as they do on a night out - and that last as long as we want them to. Her 'Picasso cuff' pictured above left is an amazing piece of design, while her Coral Cube mini pendant is pure, everyday luxury. Her gorgeous blackstone bracelet, above right, is also stunning (and is currently on sale if you feel like treating yourself today!)The full 20 Under 30 hotlist is available in Red
